The 22nd edition of the World University Winter Games (Winter Universiade) in 2005 took place in Innsbruck and Seefeld, Austria: 2,223 participants (1,449 athletes and 774 officials) participated from 50 different countries in 69 medal events; 85,000 on-site spectators, 34,000 overnight stays, 801 volunteers (14,000 man days of work), 480 hours TV coverage worldwide and an overall organising budget of €7.94 million was required to organise this elite athlete student sporting event. Untypically for these types of events, with financial TV and media rights income, the organisers managed to have a surplus of almost €0.5 million.
